Friday, November 20, a week after the Paris attacks. The Eiffel Tower is specially lit in red, white and blue until November 25<\/p><\/div>\n

A week after the Paris attacks I went out to see if anyone else was out. Along the Champs-Elys\u00e9es the cars were moving along as usual, the Ferris wheel was turning. They switched on the lights along the avenue a day later than planned. Not many wandered the the Village de No\u00ebl Christmas market lanes and sidewalks. Walking toward the Seine, Dior along the Avenue Montaigne had the most spectacular decoration among illuminated trees.<\/p>\n

Catching the bus from Alma-Marceau to Trocad\u00e9ro, the Eiffel Tower appeared dark. The red, white and blue shone on the Trocad\u00e9ro-facing side only. The crowd was thin, not elbow-to-elbow.<\/p>\n

I walked across the Pont d’I\u00e9na. \u00a0Returning home on bus 63 along Boulevard Saint-Germain, passing the Assembl\u00e9e G\u00e9n\u00e9rale, the famous caf\u00e9s were barely occupied. I could see straight through the windows to the back of the caf\u00e9s. Once at Gare d’Austerlitz, I changed to my metro number 5. The night before the sidewalk caf\u00e9s were filled in the 6th and the 11th, including music, laughter and lots of conversation. This night, in hommage perhaps, the caf\u00e9 life was still.<\/p>\n
